Anthony “Butch” Pires, 85, of Stoughton, passed away on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, of natural causes. Butch, son of Portuguese immigrant parents, Carolina Fernandes (Correia) Pires and Jose da Silva Pires from Madalena do Mar parish Madeira, was raised, and lived most of his adult life, in the house in which he was born in Stoughton. After he served in the US military reserves, he became a proud lifelong member of the local carpenters’ union. He was loving husband to Nancy Walkus Pires for 52 years, until her passing in 2015. Butch is survived by his children Michael Pires and David Pires, both of Stoughton, his grandchildren Olivia, Austin, Arabella, Zara, Alana, Ryxander, and Myla, and his many nieces and nephews, their spouses and children, and surviving in-laws, all of whom have showed him so much love and care over the years and through his recent illness. Butch was predeceased by his siblings, John, Joseph and Henry Pires, Connie Azevedo and Mary Silva.

At a young age, Butch was an athlete that distinguished himself in track & field, basketball, and, especially, football, for which was considered one of the best high school players on the East Coast. His hobbies consisted of hunting for bargains at yard sales, much to his wife’s constant chagrin, coming up with the most outlandish and impractical inventions, a constant source of bewilderment and amusement to anyone who would listen, and most importantly laughing, joking, and having a good time, which anyone who met him immediately got swept up in. Nothing, however, gave him more joy than to dance with his wife – who could match him at every step. Having been raised with more love than means, Butch was always conscientious of those in need. It was not uncommon for him to visit local sports fields to distribute baseball gloves, bats, basketballs, bicycles, and other equipment to local kids. His happiest times were surrounded by his loving family.

Visiting Hours will be held in the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Monday, October 6, 2025 from 4-7 PM. Funeral will be held from the funeral home on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 at 9 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at the Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton, at 10:30 AM. Butch was an avid supporter of The Special Olympics, St. Jude’s Hospital, and The Smile Train, and in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of these organizations.
