Augustus J. “Gus” Spano, 92, died Thursday, October 26, 2023, at his home in Sharon, after a period of failing health. Born and raised in Hyde Park, he was a graduate of Hyde Park High School. He also attended Boston State College. Gus was a Proud Veteran of the US Navy, serving from 1952 until 1956, including over 3 years overseas. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, he returned to Hyde Park and began working at Logan Square Barber Shop in Hyde Park and later worked in Betsy’s Barber Shop in Canton. Gus loved to cut hair and the camaraderie and friendships he made over the year in the barbershops. He also worked for the United Postal Service in the South Postal Annex in South Boston for over 37 years, retiring in 1989. In 1976 he married Joan Murphy and together they have spent over 46 years of marriage. Gus was an avid gardener and enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden. He was a long-time member of the Sharon Country Club in Sharon and loved golfing and the friendships he developed at the course. In his free time, Gus enjoyed spending time with his wife, extended family, and his friends.
Gus is survived by his wife Joan of Sharon. He was the brother of Mary DeChiara of Burlington and the late Anthony Spano, Ada Kirchdorfer and Jannie Marchettli. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 8:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Sharon at 10 AM. Visiting Hours Friday, November 3, 2023 from 2-5 PM. Interment will take place at Rock Ridge Cemetery, Sharon. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gus’s memory may be made to the Our Lady of Sorrows Repair Fund, 59 Cottage St., Sharon, MA 02067 or to St. Francis House, 39 Boylston St., Boston, 02116.
