Charles Sandler

Charles Sandler, 88, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died peacefully at home on Sunday, March 28, 2021 surrounded by his loving family. He was the loving husband of the late Christine C. (DelMonico) Sandler for 60 years. Son of the late Harry and Marjorie Bell (Haley) Sandler, he was born in Boston and raised in Dorchester. Charlie was a graduate of Boston Boys Trade School. He earned his Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree in Vocational Education and Post-Master's Degree in Vocational Education from Fitchburg State College. He was a Sergeant First Class in the U.S. Army and a Veteran of the Korean War. He was a resident of Stoughton since 1972.

Charlie taught at the Sarah H. Greenwood Middle School and Dorchester High School before being recruited to the Administrative Team to help open Madison Park Vocational Technical High School, where he taught cabinet making before becoming a Guidance Counselor and then Vocational Administrator. He also worked at the Eliot School of Fine & Applied Arts for 35 years, where he was the Director and Superintendent. He received numerous awards and recognitions as a vocational technical leader in Massachusetts. He was a Past President of the Massachusetts Vocational Association. Charlie wrote a SNAP (Special Needs Assessment Program) for the City of Boston for students in a self-contained learning-disabled program. He was a dedicated vocational administrator and guidance counselor who secured full scholarships for Boston students to attend degree programs at Wentworth Institute of Technology, Northeastern University and other colleges and universities in the area. He also taught new vocational teacher licensure courses at UMass-Boston for people transitioning to vocational technical education.

Charlie is survived by his beloved daughters, Rhonda J. Frank of Stoughton and Lisa M. Sandler of Plymouth, as well as his adored grandchildren, Erika, Gregory, Joshua and Jillian. He was preceded in death by 5 sisters and a brother and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Visiting Hours will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Tuesday, April 6 from 4-7 PM. Masks and social distancing required. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, a private Funeral Mass will be held followed by entombment at St. Michael Cemetery, Boston. In lieu of flowers, donations in Charlie's memory may be made to the Charlie Sandler Memorial Scholarship Fund, at The Eliot School of Fine & Applied Arts, 24 Eliot Street, PO Box 300351, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130.
