Clara E. (MacLeod) Cowgill, 91, a resident of Bridgewater, died peacefully at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton on Thursday, September 12, 2024. She was the wife of Francis C. Cowgill for 73 years. Daughter of the late Richard and Mary (Gillis) MacLeod, she was born and raised in Canton. Clara was a graduate of Canton High School, Class of 1950. She also graduated from Massachusetts Department of Mental Health and New York Board of Regents at New York University. She was a resident of Stoughton for 58 years, spending 15 winters in Deerfield Beach, Florida before moving to Bridgewater in 2010. Clara was a registered nurse at Goddard Memorial Hospital in Stoughton for many years before retiring in 1995. She was active at the First United Methodist Church in Stoughton and was devoted to her home and family.
In addition to her husband, Clara was the mother of Susan F. King of Florida, Linda J. Thomas and her husband Wayne of Stoughton, James R. Cowgill and his wife Karen Cowgill of Norton, Judith A. McNamara and her husband Stephen and Debra L. Cowgill and her partner Richard Malinowski all of Stoughton and Robert M. Cowgill and his wife Mary of Middleboro. She was the sister of Gyneth McGarvey of Stoughton and was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters. She was the beloved “Mammy” to 13 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank the Stoughton Fire Department, the EMT's, the doctors & nurses at the Good Samaritan Medical Center/BMC and the Beacon Hospice care workers during this difficult time.
Visitation will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Wednesday, September 18 from 9-10:30 AM followed by a Funeral Service at 10:30 AM. Interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Stoughton. In lieu of flowers, donations in Clara‘s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 (www.stjude.org).
