Emblem

Donald W. McCarty “Mac”, 76, passed away on Thursday December 1, 2022, surrounded by his family and dear friend. Born and raised in Paris, Texas, he was a true Texan with a big heart. After high school, he enlisted in the US Navy. He served our country with honor and traveled all over the world. He ended his Navy service in New England and that is where he met his beloved “Winnie”. Mac and Winnie shared over 50 years of memories together, creating a beautiful family together. He began working in finance, and then he decided to make a career change and become an electrician. He loved his trade and he took pride in the work and relationships he made. He worked at the Boston Globe for over 10 years and was in Local 103 IBEW Union. After retiring from the Globe, he continued to do commercial and private electrical jobs with his work partner and friend John. Mac enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, going fishing, traveling and watching sports. Around 2010, semi-retired Mac and Winnie, who were lifelong residents of Boston, decided to sell their home to move closer to their son Jitu, so they could spend more time with their grandchildren, Jayla and Jelani. “Grandpa Mac” loved his grandkids through all stages of their life from changing their diapers as babies to hearing their high school stories. He always made time to go to their school events, basketball games (he was their biggest fan, and you could always hear him cheering in the stands), and of course bring donuts from Dunkin’s on Saturday mornings.

Donald is survived by his mother, the family matriarch Ms. Flora Rucker, and was the husband of the late Winifred “Winnie”Smith. He was the beloved father to his son Jitu and his wife Keya Smith and the late Jabreel Smith. He was the adored grandfather of Akilah Evans-Smith, Jayla Smith and Jelani Smith. Donald was the brother of Ms. Delores Record, Ms. Annie McCarty, Ms. Vernice Brower, Ms. Faye Latimore, Roy McCarty, Charles McCarty and the late Wilmer G. McCarty, the late Carl McCarty, late Gus McCarty, the late Ms. Barbara Gill, the late Ms. Sarah Westfield, the late Ms. Tommie Scales. He was a loving uncle to Reginald B. Hughes, Derrick Hughes, Almasi Gill, Kethenus Gill, Aldrendo Gill, Duane Howell, Ken McCarty, Darrick McCarty, Kottrell McCarty, Kyle McCarty and a host of other nieces and nephews. He will be remembered by his dear friend John and many more friends and family members. Whether you knew him as Don or Mac, grandpa, dad or pops, you knew an incredible man with a warm smile, a laugh that could make you laugh with him and a truly kind soul. We love you and will miss you, but we know you will be watching over us.
