Elizabeth May “Betty” (Birtwistle) Holmes, 79, died peacefully at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis on Wednesday, June 10, 2026 surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of Arnold D. Holmes for 40 years. Daughter of the late Maude (Burns) Cooke and Russel Birtwistle, she was born in Quincy and raised in Stoughton. Betty was a graduate of Stoughton High School, Class of 1965. She moved to Cape Cod 38 years ago and settled in Sandwich. She worked for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Marine Fisheries Division in Woods Hole for over 30 years before retiring 8 years ago. She enjoyed walking the beach and biking on the Cape Cod Canal from Sandwich Marina to the railroad bridge as well as trips to Aruba in the fall, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her 10 beloved grandchildren.
In addition to her husband Arnold, Elizabeth is survived by her children, Peter M. Scagnoli and his wife Tara of Norton, Jill M. Lewis and her husband Mark of Lincoln, RI, Rebecca A. Kennedy and her husband Sean of Plaistow, NH, Karen Robbins of Falmouth and Kimberly Conn and her husband Chris of Falmouth. She was the loving grandmother of Ava, Lia, Owen, Evan, Timothy, Cameron, Meghan, Andrew, Madison and Kayleigh. She was the sister of Nancy Schofield of Mansfield, Patricia Mattson of Bellingham, Russel Birtwistle and his wife Janet of Georgia, John Birtwistle of Maryland and the late Anne Silva. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visiting Hours will be held in the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St., (Rte. 27) Stoughton on Monday June 22nd from 10-11:30 AM, followed by Funeral Prayers at 11:30 AM. Interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Stoughton. In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty’s memory may be made to the American Lung Association at https://donate.lung.org/.
