Ilda M. (Moniz) Mendonca, 81, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died peacefully at the Ruth McLain Hospice Home in Braintree on Friday, October 31, 2025. She was the wife of the late Manuel P. Mendonca. Daughter of the late Manuel and Emilia (Moniz) Tavares, she was born and raised on the island of São Miguel in the Azores, Portugal. She came to the United States in 1961 and settled in Stoughton. Ilda worked at Corcoran Shoe in Stoughton for 16 years then worked at Northrup in Norwood for 14 years until her retirement. She enjoyed gardening, knitting and shopping but her greatest joy was spending time with her family.
Ilda was the sister of the late Manuel Tavares, Jose Tavares and Maria Medeiros. She is survived by her niece, Filomena Rego and her husband Manuel as well as their sons, Robert and Jeffrey Rego and their granddaughter, Lillian Rego. She is also survived by many other nieces and nephews.
Visiting Hours will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Wednesday, November 5 from 9-10:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton at 11 AM. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Stoughton. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ilda‘s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or www.stjude.org.
