James Francis DeLoughrey, affectionately known as “Duke”, passed away peacefully at the age of 76, surrounded by his loving family on April 19, 2026, after an unexpected battle of pancreatic cancer. He was the loving husband to Geraldine “Gerry” (Hardy) DeLoughrey for 55 years. Born in Brighton, he was the son of the late John J. DeLoughrey and Elizabeth (Murphy) DeLoughrey, and was raised and educated in Stoughton, graduating Stoughton High School, Class of 1968. Enlisting in the U.S. Army RA Infantry out of high school, he served in the Vietnam War for three years in the 199th Infantry Company. He was a standout soldier and is the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, The Army Combat Infantry Badge, 2 OS Bars, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Expert M14 Medal, the Marksman M16 Medal, and a Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged as a Sargeant following his service. He was a member of the UA Local 537 for 55 years and served as a certified instructor in the Pipefitters Local 537 Apprenticeship Program, where he helped train the next generation of skilled tradespeople. He was a talented craftsman who could build or fix anything and would do so for anyone. He was a true outdoorsman at heart; he loved all of nature’s creatures finding his most peace hunting and fishing and spending time at his cabin in Maine which was built with his own hands. He was a devoted husband who cherished his family and friends above all else. He had a private faith in God and treated everyone he met with respect and compassion.
In addition to his beloved wife Gerry, Duke is survived by his children Erik J. DeLoughrey and his wife Tracey of Hanson, and Heather A. DeLoughrey and her partner Wendy M. Wong of Wayland. He was the grandfather to Caitlyn A. Samya and her husband Zach, Lauren E. DeLoughrey and her fiancé Eric Berardi, West T. Wong-DeLoughrey and Mick J. Wong-DeLoughrey, and to his great-grandchildren Logan E. and Luke R. Samya. He leaves behind his siblings Thomas DeLoughrey and his wife Joyce, and Patricia Chitvanni and her husband Eugene (Gino); as well as his sisters- and brothers-in-law Patricia DeLoughrey, widow of his late brother John (Jack) DeLoughrey, and Paul Joseph, widower of his late sister Claire Joseph; and many nieces, nephews, and close lifelong friends. He will be deeply missed.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff of the VA Boston Healthcare System — the West Roxbury VA Medical Center and the Brockton VA Medical Center and Community Living Center — whose skilled and compassionate care meant everything to Duke and to those who love him.
