James Luis Costa

James Luis Costa, 82, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died peacefully at Boston Medical Center South in Brockton on Sunday, March 22, 2026 with his loving family by his side. He was the husband of Isilda M. (Mendonca) Costa for 60 years. He was born and raised in Freguesia das Angustias, Horta, Faial Azores, Portugal. He was the son of the late Daniel Luis and Maria Lidia (Ataide) Costa. Jim immigrated to the United States on January 12, 1960 and settled in Stoughton. He was very proud to become a US citizen at the age of 21 in 1964. He was a machinist at Plymouth Rubber in Canton for 20 years before working for the Northrop Corporation in Norwood for 6 years and Lowe’s in Brockton for 10 years. After retiring at age 67, Jim worked part-time at the Stoughton Council on Aging.

Jim was a founding member and served as President of Clube Luis de Camoes in Stoughton for many years throughout the 70’s and 80’s. He was instrumental in having the CLC admitted to the Luso American Soccer Association (LASA). He served as General Manager of the CLC’s own men’s soccer club team for many years. He served as an organizer of the Holy Ghost Feast for decades which helps local Portuguese families in need. He was one of the original founders of the Our Lady of Fatima Feast at Immaculate Conception Church in Stoughton serving the cause devoutly for 50 years. He was a member of the Faialense Sport Club in Cambridge where he kept connections with childhood friends from his homeland, Faial.

He was an avid Boston sports fan but his greatest love of all was for his soccer team “O Glorioso” Benfica. He was so proud to be a Benfiquista. He was a champion pool player and enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and playing shuffleboard. He loved a good party with friends and loved dancing with his wife. He loved flying his drones. But more than anything he treasured time spent with his family, especially his 3 grandchildren whom he adored beyond words.

In addition to his beloved wife, Jim is survived by his children, James L. Costa, Jr. and his wife Diane of Providence, RI and Judy C. Korona of Stoughton as well as his grandchildren, Michael P. Fetherston, Kristina L. Fetherston and Kaden J. Costa. He was the brother of Carlos Costa of Stoughton and the late Maria Estela Avila and Ludgerio “Danny” Costa. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and many treasured friends.

James lived a life marked by strength, compassion, faith, and a deep devotion to his family and community. The world was a much better place with him in it. He will be sorely missed by everyone that was fortunate enough to know him.
