Janet E. (Skantz) Doherty

Janet E. (Skantz) Doherty, 89, died Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at the Boston Medical Center South in Brockton, after suffering from a fall in her home in Stoughton. Born and raised in West Boylston, she was educated in West Boylston and Stoughton and was a graduate of West Boylston High School. She also attended secretarial school and school for library science. Janet was a long time resident of Stoughton. She worked as a librarian at the Massachusetts Hospital School in Canton for many years, retiring in 2015. Her job brought her joy and fulfillment and she loved her daily interactions with the students there. Janet enjoyed being outdoors, gardening and feeding the birds. She loved her cats and enjoyed her time at the Stoughton Senior Center taking class and doing ceramics. In her free time, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Janet was the mother of David P. Doherty and his wife Kathleen R. of Stoughton and the late Edward M. Doherty, Robin L. Doherty and John W. Doherty. She was the sister of James Skantz of Mashpee, June McLaughlin of FL and the late John “Jackie” Skantz. She is also survived by 2 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Immaculate Conception Church, 122 Canton St., Stoughton on Saturday, September 27, 2025 at 10:30 AM. Visiting Hours will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Friday, September 26 from 4-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in Janet’s memory may be made to St. Anthony’s Food Pantry, 2 Park Ave. Stoughton, MA 02072 or to the Salvation Army, 23 Vernon St., Boston, MA 02119.
