Obituary

Janice M. (Smith) Loonie, 84, died peacefully Friday, August 28, 2026, at the Life Care Center of West Bridgewater, after a period of failing health. Born in Dorchester, daughter of the late Mildred and Byron Smith, she was raised in Dorchester and was a graduate of Boston Latin School. In 1962, she married Richard L. Loonie and together they enjoyed over 64 years of marriage and raised their 5 children. Jan and Rich were residents of the West Side of Brockton for many years, before moving to Bridgewater approximately 10 years ago. In addition to being a dedicated and loving wife and mother, Jan helped her husband Richard as a bookkeeper for his business Loonies Liquors in Dorchester. She also worked in the office of Dr. Albert Ackil in Brockton for several years. Janice was a longtime active parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Brockton and formerly at Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Stoughton.

Janice was the heart and soul of her family. She enjoyed doing crafts, painting, sewing, baking, hosting holidays and game nights but her happiest times were when she was surrounded by her family.. Some of her most cherished memories were spent with them on vacation to Disney World every April and in Aruba every October.

In addition to her husband Richard, she is survived by her five children, Paul T. Loonie and his wife Dawn Marie of Sandwich, John R. Loonie and his wife Suzanne of Boxboro, Judith A. Loonie and Thomas P. Loonie and partner Elizabeth Cooney, both of Franklin and James M. Loonie and his wife Carla of Halifax. She was the beloved Nana of Kate, Matthew, Ryan and Erin Loonie, Samantha and husband Matt Thompson, Jessica and fiance Shawn Whittaker, Nicholas and girlfriend Sydney Laliberte, Olivia and Sean Loonie and her beloved granddog Angel. She was the sister of Lynne Faulkner of Braintree and the late Richard Smith, and is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Visiting Hours will be held in the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St., (Rte. 27) Stoughton on Wednesday, September 2, 2026 from 4-7 PM. Funeral will be held from the Funeral Home on Thursday, September 3, 2026 at 9 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Brockton at 10:30 AM.
