781-344-2676Joao R. Pombo, 79, died unexpectedly on Friday, August 28, 2026, at the Boston Medical Center South in Brockton. Raised on the island of Madeira, Portugal, he was born in Tabua, son of the late Joao Aguiar Pombo and Matilde Rosa Rodrigues, and was raised and educated in Funchal. He was a graduate of External Commercial de Jofre Ramalho. Joao was a Veteran of the Portuguese Army. In 1974, he married Maria da Luz DeAguiar and together they shared over 52 years of marriage and raised their two children. Later in 1974, he moved to the United States and settled in Stoughton where they raised their family. Joao worked at the Foxboro Company and later became Invensys, as a Machine Shop Operator for many years, retiring at the age of 66.
Joao was an active member of the Portuguese Community in Stoughton. He was a longtime member and former Vice President of the Portuguese National Club in Stoughton and was heavily involved with the Our Lady of Fatima Feast at Immaculate Conception Church, serving as the treasurer for several years. Joao and Maria da Luz enjoyed traveling and have wonderful memories of their trips back to the island of their birth, Madeira. He was a skilled handyman and enjoyed carpentry, woodworking and was a gifted mechanic. A fan of Benfica FC, in his free time, he enjoyed fishing with his brothers-in-law out of Fairhaven and spending time with his family.
Joao is survived by his wife, Maria da Luz (DeAguiar) Pombo of Stoughton, and his children, Gina M. Pombo Vasconcelos and her husband Paul Vasconcelos of Sharon and Mark J. Pombo of Stoughton. He was the beloved Avo of Savaughn Vasconcelos and Miguel Vasconcelos. Joao was the brother of Jose Pombo and Conceicao Sousa, both of Stoughton, Antonio and Manuel Pombo, both of Portugal, and the late Afonso, Maria and Matilde Pombo. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visiting Hours will be held in the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St., (Rte. 27) Stoughton on Friday, September 4, 2026 from 9-10:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton at 11 AM. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Stoughton. Donations in his memory may be made to the Joslin Diabetes Center, 1 Joslin Pl., Boston, MA 02215 or to the American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692.
