John Gomes, Jr., 74, a lifelong resident of Stoughton, died peacefully on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at the VA Medical Center in West Roxbury after a lengthy illness. Son of the late John and Margaret (Tarchara) Gomes, he was born in Brockton and raised in Stoughton. He was a graduate of Stoughton High School, Class of 1969 and attended Massasoit Community College in Brockton. John was a Private 2nd Class in the U.S. Army and a Veteran of the Vietnam Era. He worked for the Stoughton Department of Public Works for many years. John was a Past Commander of the American Legion Post 89 in Stoughton. He was also a member of the VFW Post 1645, AMVETS Post 1977, Knights of Columbus Council 200, Sons of Italy and the Portuguese National Club all in Stoughton. He loved quahogging, playing pool, singing karaoke and spending time with his family and friends.
John was the brother of Evelyn McStowe of Stoughton and the late Edward Gomes. He was the uncle of Sandra Sprague, Paul McStowe III and Edward Gomes Jr. He is also survived by his longtime companion, Kathy Johnson.
Visitation will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Wednesday, May14 from 9:30-11 AM followed by Funeral Prayers at 11 AM. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Stoughton.
