Jose Artur (Rodrigues) Freitas, 81, passed away on February 17, 2023 in Santa Cruz, Flores, Azores after a period of declining health. Born in Lajedo, Flores, Azores, he was the son of the late Jose Ambrosio Freitas and Leonor (Lourenco) Rodrigues, and was raised and educated there. Like all men of that era, he was recruited and served in the Portuguese military. He came to the United States as a young man, and settled in Stoughton in 1966, where he worked and raised his family, and went on to earn his US citizenship.
He enjoyed searching for trinkets and hidden treasures at the Norton Flea Market, beach days at Demarest Lloyd State Park and was an avid Boston Bruins fan. Jose and his ex-wife Maria loved to host New Year’s Eve parties, that included dear friends and family with delicious food and fun for all. As a family he enjoyed traveling to London, a city in Ontario, Canada, to visit his sister Isabel and her family. He also enjoyed traveling to the Azores to visit his parents, siblings, extended family and friends. He stayed active in the Portuguese community while in Stoughton, participating in traditional Portuguese culture and his favorite event was Matanca Do Porco. He returned to Flores, Azores in the late 1980’s where he worked in farming and livestock activities. He ultimately bought a home in Lomba, Flores, Azores and went on to retire to the island lifestyle.
Jose leaves behind his children, Helen Bezanson and her late husband Ronnie of Abington, Edwin Freitas (Canton Fire) and his wife Lisa of Stoughton, Lucy Hogan and her husband Dan of Bridgewater and Tricia Sweet and her husband Todd of Quincy. He is survived by his grandchildren, Jessica, Dylan and Nicholas. He is also survived by his siblings, Andre and his wife Maria do Rosario, Lino and his late wife Maria Altina, Maria Isabel and her husband Jose Ramerio, Gabriella and her late husband Jose Gonsalves and Abel and his wife Lidia. He was the godfather to Christina Serpa and Leandra Ambrosio, and also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins, and was predeceased by his former brother-in-law Jose E. Tomas and Albert.
Funeral Services and interment were held in Lajedo, Flores, Azores. Donations in Jose’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 309 Waverley Oaks Rd, Waltham, MA 02452.
Jose’s daughter Tricia would like to extend a heartfelt and special thanks to her cousins Christina, Sandra, Rita and Octavia, her Tia Isabel, and her girlfriend Lucy for their kind efforts that pulled the family lineage together.
