Jose F. Gomes, 86, died Wednesday, January 12, 2022, at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton after a period of declining health. Born in Lomba on the island of Flores in the Azores, he was raised and educated in Lomba. In 1960 he married Maria do Carmo Couto Lima, and together they shared over 61 years of marriage and raised two children. Together with his wife, he came to the United States in 1966 and settled in Stoughton. Mr. Gomes worked at Morse Shoe in Canton for many years and later worked at Country Buffett in Brockton, retiring in 1997. Jose was a member of the Portuguese National Club in Stoughton, the Holy Ghost Society in Bridgewater and was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church in Stoughton. He was an accomplished gardener and in his free time, he enjoyed cooking, taking care of his chickens, cheating at cards and spending time with his family.
Mr. Gomes is survived by his wife Maria do Carmo (Couto Lima) Gomes of Stoughton, his son Paul G. Gomes and his wife Amber of Hubbardston and his siblings Luis Gomes of CA and Mary DoVale of Stoughton. He was predeceased by his son Joseph C. Gomes. He was the Avo of AnnMarie Rebolo, Jude Gomes, Nicholas Gomes, Amanda Gomes and Joseph Rebolo. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and his great granddaughter Luisa.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St., (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Saturday, January 15th at 9 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church at 10 AM. Visiting Hours Friday from 4-7 PM. Donations in Jose's memory may be made to the Friars Club at the Chapel of Our Savior, 475 Westgate Dr., Brockton.
