Jose Espirito “Joe” Leonardo, 71, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died peacefully at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth on Friday, January 6, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Dolores A. (Jardin) Leonardo for 51 years. Son of Adelina (Espirito) Leonardo of Stoughton and the late Antonio Leonardo, he was born and raised in Flores, Azores, Portugal before moving to California when he was 8 years old. He moved to Stoughton 8 years later. Joe worked for Boston Brace in Avon for 12 years and Wehsco in Stoughton for over 10 years before retiring at age 60. Joe was larger than life with his outgoing personality. He enjoyed Saturday morning breakfasts at Zachary’s in Stoughton as well as frequenting local Dunkin Donuts with friends. He was an avid runner and finished the Boston Marathon 10 times. He enjoyed trips to Plymouth and trips to New Hampshire, especially Lincoln and the White Mountains but his greatest joy was spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife and mother, Joe is survived by his son, David J. Leonardo and his wife Janet of East Wareham as well as his grandchildren, Jillian and Cameron Leonardo. He was the brother of Maria “Mary Jo” Serpa, John Leonardo and Antonio Leonardo all of Stoughton and the late Fatima Dias. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Thursday, January 12 at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton at 10:30 AM. Visiting Hours Wednesday from 4-7 PM. Interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Stoughton. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe‘s memory may be made to the International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care, IAHPC, 5535 Memorial Drive, Suite F - PMB 509, Houston, TX 77007.
