Julio G. Maia, 78, a resident of Taunton, died at Morton Hospital in Taunton on Monday, May 10, 2021. He was the husband of Fatima (Melo) Maia for 14 years. Son of the late Julio and Otilia (Gaspar) Maia, he was born and raised in Figueira da Foz, Portugal. He resided in New Bedford for 20 years and Brockton for 17 years before moving to Taunton 4 years ago. Julio loved being on the ocean traveling the world and worked on a cargo ship transporting food for 21 years before being a Captain of a fishing boat for 24 years until his retirement at age 65. He was an avid Benfica fan and was a member of both Club Luis de Camoes and the Portuguese National Club both in Stoughton. He enjoyed fishing, nature, camping, traveling, cooking and eating good Portuguese food, music and dancing but his greatest joy was spending time with his wife and family who loved him dearly.
In addition to his wife, Julio is survived by his son, Rui Maia of Portugal and his step-children, Jose Almeida and his wife Cintia and Kevin Almeida and his fiancé Eileen Lohan all of Brockton and Michelle Hayes and her husband Matthew of Attleboro. He was the grandfather of Catarina Maia, Alexia Almeida, Nathan Almeida and Noah Almeida. He is also survived by his sister, São Oliveira of Portugal and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting Hours will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Thursday, May 13 from 3:30-6:30 PM. Masks and social distancing required. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, funeral service will be private.
