Maria Fernanda Lopes, 84, died peacefully on September 4, 2021 at the Brockton Hospital in Brockton, after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Born in Santa Cruz, on the island of Flores in the Azores, she was raised and educated in Santa Cruz. In 1955, she married Humberto A. Lopes in Flores, and together they enjoyed over 60 years of marriage and raised two children before his death in 2019. In April of 1973, she moved her young family to the United States and settled in Stoughton. She worked as a Machine Operator for Ark-Les Switch in Stoughton for over 37 years, retiring at age 65. Mrs. Lopes enjoyed cooking and was known for her Arroz Doce'. She also enjoyed tending to her flower garden. In her free time, she enjoyed spending time with her beloved family and her grandchildren.
Mrs. Lopes is survived by her children; Helvio M. Lopes and Helia M. M. Horner, both of Stoughton. She was the sister of the late Maria Soares Medina, Jose Medina and Francelina Cabral. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Eddie N. Horner, Madison E. Horner and Joslyn Arcuri.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Thursday, September 9, 2021, at 9:15 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church at 10:30 AM. Visiting Hours Wednesday, September 8, 2021, from 5-8 PM. Interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Stoughton.
