Martha (MacAfee) Gomes, 93, passed away on October 16, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family, following a period of declining health.
Born in Dedham, Martha was raised and educated in Quincy and Easton, graduating from Oliver Ames High School in the Class of 1951. Moving to Easton as a teenager, she found her forever home in the community she loved. Martha made lifelong friends at Oliver Ames, where her achievements as a gifted three-sport athlete in field hockey, basketball, and softball earned her induction into the Oliver Ames High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004. Over the years, she continued to head the reunion planning committee for the class of 1951, often hosting them in her home. After high school, she attended secretarial school and worked in Boston, commuting daily by train from Easton.
In 1954, Martha married Alfred F. Gomes, sharing 47 cherished years of marriage until his passing in 2001. Together, they raised their nine beloved children on Jenny Lind Street, in the very house where Martha grew up and lived the rest of her days. Martha was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who relished her role as the heart of her home and loved the daily buzz and activity within it. She dedicated her life to her family, never missing her children's sporting events and extracurricular activities, typing term papers through sleepless nights, packing daily homemade lunches, and cooking dinner every evening with patience, warmth, and steadfast love.
Martha is survived by her nine children: Nancy DeLuca and her husband, Jack; Peter Gomes and his wife, Laurie; Andrea Pucillo and her husband, Richard; Marilyn Cunha, all of Easton; Charles Gomes of Lakeville; Kathleen Marsh and her husband, Paul, of Yarmouth Port; Joseph Gomes and his wife, Suzanne, of Harwich Port; Frank Gomes of Venice, Florida; and Marsha Armando and her husband, Michael, of Canton. She was predeceased by her siblings Norma Baer, Kenneth MacAfee, and Nancy Sciore. She also leaves behind 22 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Martha found joy in life's simple pleasures, such as working on crossword and jigsaw puzzles, reading, knitting, sewing, and keeping the cookie jar full. Though a devoted homemaker, she also worked "part-time" keeping the Gomes Bar Service organized, helping Alfred set up and manage events for Stonehill College functions, weddings at Oakes Ames Memorial Hall, and backyard gatherings around the fireplace. Together, Martha and Alfred enjoyed memorable trips to Madeira, Portugal and Florida, treasuring every beach they visited, the warm sunshine, and the sound of the ocean waves. Her most treasured moments were centered around family—cheering them on in the Pan-Mass Challenge, watching her children and grandchildren skate on Christmas Eve, and welcoming everyone into her home with open arms.
At Martha’s request, a Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 193 Main Street, Easton, on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Easton.
