Martin H. Smith, III, died Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at the Brockton Hospital in Brockton, after a period of declining health. He was 78. Born in Boston, son of the late Florence (Ferzoco) Smith and Martin H. Smith, Jr., he was raised and educated in Jamaica Plain and was a graduate of Jamaica Plain High School. After high school, he joined the US Army and served in Vietnam, earning several medals and citations, including 2 Purple Hearts. After his honorable discharge, he returned home to Jamaica Plain and became a member of Teamsters Local 25 and began his career as a truckdriver for Decatur Hopkins and Yellow Freight. At age 50 he started his new career as a Firefighter and nobly served on the Taunton Fire Department for many years. He retired several years ago. Marty was a resident of Lakeville for the past 5 years after spending 10 years in Beaver Cove, ME and raising his family in Taunton
Marty was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed spending his days hunting, fishing, camping and boating. He loved spending his days riding his Harley and always found time for a spirited political discussion. In his younger days he enjoyed running and completed 3 marathons, including 2 NYC marathons. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Middleboro. In his free time, he enjoyed playing chess and spending time with his family and friends.
Marty is survived by his children, Alicia L. Arpino of Norwood and Martin H. Smith IV of Acushnet. He was the grandfather of Samantha Tate, Isabella Arpino, Mariah Smith and Karlie Smith and the great grandfather of Connor Goncalves, Noah Goncalves and Bennett Tate. He was the brother of Ronald E. Smith of Wrentham and Brian C. Smith of West Bridgewater and is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Visiting Hours will be held in the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St., (Rte. 27) Stoughton on Monday, June 1, 2026 from 4-7 PM. Funeral Prayers will be offered in the funeral home on Tuesday, June 2, 2026 at 11 AM with burial to follow at Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton. Donations in lieu of flowers in Marty’s memory may be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10306.
