Mary Doris (Stone) Cotter, 90, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2026. Born in Boston on December 7, 1935, she was the beloved wife of the late Leo E. Cotter, with whom she shared 51 years of marriage. Doris grew up in Brockton and graduated in 1953 from Our Lady of Nazareth School in Wakefield, where she excelled academically and served as both class president and captain of the basketball team. She began her career with the New England Telephone Company as an executive secretary before joining the Stoughton Massachusetts School Department, where she served as Director of Food Services until her retirement in 1989. Doris will be remembered for her warmth, creativity, and gentle spirit. A lifelong animal lover, she opened her home to numerous cats and dogs over the years. She was also a gifted crafter and an especially talented knitter, creating handmade pieces for her family. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and quiet strength, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Doris leaves behind her loving son James P. Cotter, Sr. and his wife Sharon of Jamestown, RI, along with her four cherished grandchildren James "JP" Cotter, Jr. and his wife Jennifer of Mooresville, NC, Jackie Griffith and her husband Sean of Wilbraham, MA, Alyssa Leonard and her husband Tyler of East Taunton, and Megan Cotter and her partner Joseph Matrango of Bridgewater. She was the great‑grandmother of Emmett Griffith.
