Rev. Joseph P. McDermott, a longtime beloved Priest in the Boston Archdiocese, died Tuesday, January 31, 2023 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, after a short illness. Born in Worcester, he was raised and educated in Hudson and was a graduate of Hudson High School, Class of 1953 where he was a member of the soccer team and played trumpet in the band. He attended Boston College and then entered St. John’s Seminary in Brighton where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree and his Masters Degree in Divinity and was Ordained a Priest in 1962. He later earned his Doctorate from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge. He was a dedicated Catholic priest in the Archdiocese of Boston for over 60 years being stationed at St. Michael’s Parish in Avon, St. Catherine’s Parish in Norwood, St. Timothy’s Parish in Norwood and was the Chaplain at Norfolk State Prison for many years. He was the longtime Pastor at Immaculate Conception Church in Stoughton for over 22 years, until his retirement in 2014. He then became the Senior Priest in Residence at Blessed Sacrament & St. Mary’s Parish in Walpole for the past 8 years. Fr. Joe was an avid traveler and enjoyed pilgrimages to several different countries including Italy, Brazil, Mexico, Portugal, Spain and particularly enjoyed his trip to Garabandal Spain and trips to Medjugorje, Bosnia and Herzegovenia. In his free time, he enjoyed dining out and spending time with his family and friends.
Fr. Joe was the brother of Francis McDermott of Norwood, Mary Daniels of Hudson and the late Carol Graceffa. He was the brother in law of Vincent Graceffa of Waltham, Joan McDermott of Norwood and the late John Daniels. He is also survived by 9 nieces and nephews.
Visiting Hours will be held in the Immaculate Conception Church, 122 Canton St. (Rte. 27) Stoughton on Monday, February 6, 2023 from 4-7 PM and again on Tuesday from 9-10 AM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church on Tuesday at 10:30 AM. Interment will take place on Wednesday, February 8 at 10:30 AM. Donations in Fr. Joe’s memory made to Immaculate Conception Church in Stoughton, St. Michael’s Church in Hudson or to your local Catholic Parish.
