Sandra E. “Sandy” Remmes, 86, formerly of Stoughton, Massachusetts, and Warwick, Rhode Island, died peacefully on Tuesday, September 22 at Stillwater Assisted Living in Smithfield, Rhode Island. Born on June 10, 1940, in Stoughton, she was the daughter of Prudence (Menard) Hepworth, a native of Cumberland, RI, and Leonard Hepworth, who immigrated from Dewsbury, England.

Sandy graduated from Stoughton High School in 1958 and spent most of her life in Stoughton. After high school, she commuted to Boston to attend Fisher College, where she earned an associate degree in paralegal studies. From 1960 to 1966, she worked as a legal secretary for the Boston law firm Herrick, Smith, Donald, Farley & Ketchum. There, she assisted attorneys working with the Massachusetts Crime Commission, Massachusetts State Police and Attorney General’s Office on cases involving former state officials, including former Massachusetts governor Foster Furcolo.

On September 11, 1965, she married Stephen J. Remmes of Dorchester, Massachusetts, with whom she had two children. They divorced in 1980, but remained friends until his death in 2011.

From 1976 to 1980, Sandy worked for the Special Needs Collaborative at Southeastern Regional High School in North Easton, Massachusetts. She then spent 26 years as assistant to the publisher of The Enterprise newspaper in Brockton before retiring in 2006. In 2007, she moved to Warwick to be closer to her children and grandchildren.

Sandy was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She will be remembered for her generosity, curiosity and playful sense of humor. She loved dance, live theater, music, art, yoga, movies and reading. She particularly enjoyed watching British mysteries on public television.

She is survived by her son, Daniel J. Remmes, and his wife, Jennifer (Glennon) Remmes, of Fairfield, Connecticut; her daughter, Jennifer M. Remmes, of Cumberland, Rhode Island; her grandchildren, Gretchen Gilbert and her fiancé, Paul Barry, of Watertown, Massachusetts, Serena Remmes, a senior at Elon University in North Carolina, and Miranda Remmes, a sophomore at Simmons University in Boston; and her brother, Richard Hepworth, and his wife, Anne (Fitzpatrick) Hepworth, of Sandwich, Massachusetts. She is also survived by several nieces, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Visiting Hours will be held at Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park Street, Stoughton, Massachusetts, on Tuesday, September 29, 2026 from4:30 PM-6:30 PM with Memorial Prayers and Family Reflections at 6:30 PM.
