Sheila M. (Thornton) Mendez

Sheila Marie (Thornton) Mendez, 73, of Stoughton, MA, passed away on September 1, 2022 at her home in Stoughton, after a long period of declining health. Born on September 2, 1948 in Passaic, NJ, the daughter of the late Robert L. and Belle Thornton, Sr., she was raised and educated in Newark and Montclair, NJ schools and was a graduate of Montclair High School.  She was also a graduate of Bryant & Stratton Junior College in Boston.  Sheila was a beloved wife of Herbert E. Mendez and devoted mother of five children. She was caring, loving and protective of her family, all traits she carried into her work in the Stoughton Public School system where she worked for over 20 years as a teacher’s aide for special needs students. Sheila was known for her big heart, beautiful smile and infectious laugh. She loved shopping, spending time with her family and friends, taking cruises, her yearly vacation to Oak Bluffs and was often in the center of everything.

Sheila leaves to honor and cherish her memory, her husband Herbert E. Mendez, whom she married on January 4, 1969, Five children; Niecia Nunes and her husband Robert of Stoughton, Dawn Mendez-Knox and her husband Stephan Knox of Hurley, NY; Christopher Mendez, Sr. and his wife Christine of Taunton, Keon Craig Mendez of Quincy, and Marquis Craig of Biddeford, ME. She was the beloved Grandma of nine grandchildren: Andrew, Stephan, Symone, Alecia, Alex, Sarai, Christopher, Camille and X’zayvien. She also leaves one brother, Robert L. Thornton, Jr., of New Jersey and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wants to express their sincere appreciation to the caregivers from Old Colony Hospice, specifically, Sheila’s aides Mimi and Ekhmine and her nurse Tom. The care provided to our wife, mom and grandmother was invaluable and will never be forgotten.

Visiting Hours will be held in the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park Street, Stoughton on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 from 10AM-12:30 PM with Funeral Services at 12:30 PM, with Pastor Stanley Schultz presiding.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation be made to Old Colony Hospice and Palliative Care, 321 Manley St., Bridgewater, MA 02379 and/or Alzheimer’s Association at: act.alz.org.
