Thomas James Carter

Thomas James Carter of Stoughton, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham on Friday, January 13, 2023.

Born December 24, 1930 in Maspeth, NY to the late Joseph and Josephine Carter.  He is predeceased by his wife Dorothy of 50 years and his sisters, Mary, Margaret and Josephine.  He is survived by his brother Joseph and sons Steve and his wife Donna, Paul and Robert and his wife Lesley.  Tom had eight grandchildren, Kerry, Paul, Richard, Alison, Christopher, Courtney, Alexandra and Robert.

Tom was a brilliant computer programmer.  He started his career as a punch card operator on IBM Mainframes at Klein’s Department Store in New York City and ending with managing IBM mini’s at New England Art Publishers.

He served his country proudly in the United States Air Force, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant.  In the Air Force, he honed his computer skills in Wiesbaden, Germany and Bristol, England before returning to the States.

He was a great coach, winning numerous championships in Stoughton youth basketball and baseball leagues.  He had compiled a record of 106-8 coaching some legendary teams.  Tom was also President of the Stoughton Babe Ruth League.

During retirement, Tom enjoyed fishing and riding in a golf cart watching his sons play golf together.  Always the coach, “head down and feet straight” could be heard while standing over a 12-foot putt.

He will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Saturday, January 21 from 9-10 AM followed by a Funeral Mass being celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 122 Canton St., Stoughton at 10:30 AM.  Interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Stoughton.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Tom‘s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 309 Waverley Oaks Rd, Waltham, MA 02452.
