William I. Monroe, III, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died peacefully at New England Sinai Hospital in Stoughton on Wednesday, September 30, 2020. He was the husband of Carol L. (Pierce) Monroe for 60 years. Son of the late William I. Monroe, Jr. and Ruby E. (Gage) Monroe, he was born in Haverhill and raised in Bridgton, ME and Dorchester. Bill was a graduate of Dorchester High School and attended Bentley College. He resided in Stoughton for 57 years. He was a banker at North Weymouth Cooperative Bank and Dorchester Savings Bank for many years. He also worked for O'Connell Brothers Construction in Quincy before retiring at age 62. Bill was a member of the Joseph Webb Masonic Lodge in Boston. He enjoyed collecting baseball cards, a good cigar and daily breakfast at various local restaurants, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by his children, William I. Monroe, IV and his wife Kelly of Sharon and Nancy L. Fisher and her longtime companion Sean Lee of Stoughton as well as his grandchildren, Paige Monroe and Thomas J. Fisher, Jr. He was the brother of Richard E. Monroe and his wife Helen of Reading and is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Visiting Hours will be held in the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St., (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Sunday, October 4 from 1-4 PM. Masks and social distancing required. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, funeral services will be private. Interment will take place at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge. In lieu of flowers, donations in William's name may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
